"INSIDER Secrets to Domain Name Ownership Search and How to List a Web Site"

Discover what makes the best name for a website, explanation of the system, how to register your Internet site and more!

One of the first questions many new page designers ask is how to do a domain name ownership search and then how to list their web site. These are both good starting points but let's begin with an explanation of the DNS system and how it works.

Looking through Dictionary.Com tm I found a couple of different definitions for domain names. Here are the important ones ...

1. "a name owned by a person or organization and consisting of an alphabetical or alphanumeric sequence followed by a suffix indicating the top-level domain: used as an Internet address to identify the location of particular Web pages: Our domain name is the name of our school followed by .edu. "

 2. "n. A series of alphanumeric strings separated by periods, such as www.hmco.com, that is an address of a computer network connection and that identifies the owner of the address."

So, as you can see it's fairly simple as defined in the example in paragraph one. What you type in at the top of your Internet browser (Internet Explorer, Foxfire or Netscape) beginning with "www" is considered a domain name search.

There is more than one way to put your new Internet pages online. After you've learned how to build a website, you can start from scratch and go directly to an ISP and do an ownership search to find a name list to choose from.

Once you've found just the right name (Hint: try to get at least your major keyword in your new url) you'll need to decide which types of services you will need. For personal use this is simple but for a business online you could need other add-ons such as ssl hosting for shopping carts or to accept orders for products. This will be obvious once you understand more about selecting an ISP (Internet Service Provider).

About Using Other People's Sites

Another option is to find expired names to try and find one with Google ranking. Beware though -- These are not always as they seem and domains that have been banned or that have lost their luster might hurt more than they help.

Where to Find the Domain Name List

One of the easiest and most respected places to search for domain name ownership and lists of available url's is at Whois . The site is easy to use and you'll know in an instance if your desired website names are taken. Be creative and you'll come up with a winner!

If's really pretty simple to find a domain name for your personal or business website. All you need to do is to visit one of the authorities like Whois or one of the many web hosts and type in a domain you want to register. If it's taken, just repeat the process until you find something suitable.

I like using .com but there is also .net, . us or .org to consider. Much has to do with what you have to offer. The generic names for ownership (like toothbrush.com, etc.) are all but gone but with a little imagination you can collect a domain name list and find some really good choices for your new Internet sites.
