Blogging 101

by: Jean Pardue

What is Blogging?

What is blogging and how do you use it?

This issue of blogging 101 is mostly about the blogging vocabulary. To understand blogs, you need to know the terms blog, platform, domain, and web host.

Once you have learned these key elements of blogging, you can enter any conversation about this new subject with confidence. After you are more familiar with blogs and how they work, you will be on your way to passing the final exam of blogging 101.

The definition of a blog

The name blog is derived from weblog, which simply means a series of online posts presented in reverse chronological order. A sort of a journal if you will. That's all there is to it!

Most blogs are comprised of all text, but you will also find many other varieties such as photo blogs or video blogs.

Blogging can have a technical side

This section of blogging 101 has to do with the technical side of things. If you plan to launch a blog, you will need three things to start - a platform, a web hosting service, and a domain name.

  1. The blogging platform - Your platform for your new blog will consist of a computer software program that allows you to write posts and to update your information. Your platform is also what you use to design the look of your blog including the type of font used, layout, etc.
  2. Web host for your new blog - The web hosting site is not unlike a virtual filing cabinet where you will keep your blog. You will upload and edit your posts from this hosting company. There are free hosting companies including blogger.com and wordpress.com , the latter being our choice.
  3. Domain name - This is the online address of your blog, and usually ends in ‘dot com'. A blogging address is pretty much the same as owning a website without quite the formality.

These short facts are just the beginning. After a little practice you will become an expert blogger and hopefully other people will become interested in what you have to say. Keep your blog light & simple and you should develop a nice little (or large) following on the Internet.

This report about blogging is as complete as it can be today. But you should always leave open the possibility that future changes in the structure of personal or business blogs may affect your online presence in the coming years. Always be willing to learn more about blogs.

You have just passed blogging 101 ... Now, go to it!!
